Blue Heron Farm Alpacas is a start-up alpaca business in northwest Chatham County, North Carolina. Our herd currently includes Gazelle, her baby Audrey, born September 28, 2008, Suzie, acquired last spring at about six months of age, and their companions, Louise and Edmund. The business plan is to breed for greys (Edmund's coloration), because I like his looks. Though Gazelle is a black alpaca, her grandparents were greys, and she was bred to Alex, a grey herd sire. Audrey, however, is a brunette just like her mother. In fall 2009, having been rebred to Alex the previous fall, she did have a grey baby, but the little boy only lived a week. Suzie is a replacement I guess, and she is a beautiful strawberry blonde. I have yarn and compost for sale, but so far this enterprise is not making a profit. But it is fun!
On the following pages, you'll find pictures of some of the residents of our six-and-a-half acre farm: the alpacas; their guardians, Faith and Dolly, the Great Pyrenees; the horses, Windsong, Quicksilver, Chesapeake and Barry; the guinea fowl who keep our property tick- and beetle-free; the house dogs, Otto, Clint, Manny, Beau and Bandit; and the house cats, Tux and her kittens Dahlia, Susie and Zorro, and, most recently, the chickens. I'll be posting the latest news on the Blog page, so come back and visit!
